August challenge theme: Knives Out!

Buck Knife by Mark Lindamood WINS the $20 gift certificate from Hill Center! This was their favorite art/image. Congrats to Mark!

Our neighbor, Hill Center, offers Knife Skill classes several times every year. To tie in with their ongoing classes (next one is Sept. 16 Wednesday from 6-7:30pm), our challenge art theme for August is Knives Out.

Our artists will be posting images/artwork with the theme: Knives Out. Hill Center staff members will chose ONE favorite “knife” image and award the artist a $20 gift certificate, announced the first week of September. You can reinterpret knives in many ways!

August 4: Tuesday’s Art Critique Zooming

Every first Tuesday of the month, members bring 1-2 works in progress to a peer group session for comments and positive critiques. Artists find this useful input in a friendly group setting, virtually on Zoom. 10am-12pm. Please email Carolyn R. for your invite to zoom!

Bright Bold Big Art Exhibit September-October 2020

Members of Capitol Hill Art League are invited to submit ready to hang artwork to be considered for public display in a busy medical office in Chevy Chase, MD. All sizes are acceptable with weight under 50 lbs. Artwork must be for sale/all potential buyers will be given contact info for each artist. Sales will be conducted between the artist and buyer. Artwork can be bought and removed from the walls if the artist agrees. The office will retain a list of prices/artist contact info of the artwork on display.

Entry OPENS: Wednesday July 22 at 5pm. 1-5 entries for 2-D artwork only, 3-D not accepted for this show. Fees: $5 per entry – 5 entries maximum.

Deadline for entries: July 29! Accepted artwork must be hand delivered by the artist, ready to hang to the Chevy Chase office at the pre-arranged, designated date and time. Address will be supplied. Exhibit runs: September-October. Artists will be notified with all details for drop off and pick up of artwork.

Please use insurance for your artwork if that is a consideration. CHAL will not be held responsible for artwork on display.

Making New Connections Art Show

Our new live gallery exhibit is dedicated to new members who joined our art league since January 2020. We invited our newest artists to display their art work at Frame of Mine Gallery, viewable from outside or INSIDE the shop! This talented bunch exhibits photographs, collage, watercolors, yupo paintings, acrylics, charcoal, and more and everything is for sale! Featured Artists: Anne Albright, E. Lynn Coates, Ellen Yahuda, Jeffery Miller, KB Kessler, Kim DiDonato-Murrell, Lori Niland Rounds, Martina Sestakova, Mary Elizabeth Gosselink, Nan Raphael, Sarah Burford, Louise Holland, and Steve Kunin.

Members voted for their favorite artwork in this show and the top vote went to Louise Holland for her Georgetown photograph. Louise receives a $25 gift certificate from Plaza Arts in DC.

July 1 NEW membership rate!

Welcome to CHAL and now is the time to sign up and become part of this active, presently zooming, art community for DMV artists, beginners and pros alike. We are a diverse group of all ages from Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia and feature all mediums including photography.

Our gallery is located on Capitol Hill and is closed for the summer due to you know what. Right now our exhibits and receptions are virtual and we keep creating artwork because artists naturally self-isolate to create work.

2021 New season runs: January through December for $60 and at least two volunteer hours. We used to follow the school year, Sept-August but that was too confusing! What this means is that if you join now, your membership will continue right into 2021 expiring 12/31/21. A deal!

Because we are unsure of our live exhibitions, we will have our themed/juried and unjuried art shows online with digital entry. We can say that we have our annual members’ exhibit at the Hill Center and a pop up show at Frame of Mine-if all goes well and these will be online also.
